Robert Young

Fashion Designer - The Cloth

Trinidad and Tobago

PROFILE

“By life, by doing, by making, by action, self-trained...” Robert Young is the creative and lead designer of the Cloth. The brand started as a creative collective 34 years ago and currently remains a space for creatives to design new concepts as well as re-work the brand’s Classic Collection. The Cloth, best known for its simple yet striking designs in cool pieces in cotton, appliquéd in bright colours, continue to deliver the Caribbean perspective to its customers. “I see myself as an artist working with clothing, not a fashion designer, always attempting through my designs to make a difference in the world.” Growing up in the time of Trinidad and Tobago’s trade union movement, Robert remembers attending meetings with his mother, Grace Coggins. Robert inherited the spirit of activism from both his father Joe Young, a former trade unionist and his mother. She was the secretary of a trade union and a founding member of a credit union. This has undoubtedly led to his socially conscious approach to life and fashion, describing himself as “a feminist, activist, artist, designer, historian and Caribbeanist.” For more on The Cloth, browse the collections below.
